ABOUT

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Fern has worked as a visual artist in one capacity or another his entire life. Beginning in middle school he first cut his teeth as an artist in LA’s vibrant graffiti scene, developing a keen eye for color and motion. He soon expanded into illustration and animation as a means to create art that didn’t get cleaned up and washed away. Best known for his colourful characters and narrative-driven work, which spans a broad range of mediums including large-scale acrylic paintings, resin sculptures, digital art, and installations.

Fern's art centers on the characters he creates: Whimsical creatures with their own stories, worlds, and desires, but even more important are the little details that make those stories interesting.

Take Ringo, for instance: an adorable blue monster and the subject of Fern's first character series. Ringo's story is about finding happiness — in the form of a shiny red apple — but the pieces themselves are about Ringo’s reactions. Using intense colours and overlapping elements, Fern amplifies the energy of every emotion. “It’s all the different emotions you go through in the pursuit of happiness.”
